How to setup a passkey

To set up a passkey you should have a lock on your computer, mobile phone or other device. A lock can be your fingerprint, face, PIN or swipe pattern. You can set up a passkey on your computer, laptop, mobile phone or tablet. You should only set up passkeys on your personal or trusted devices.

To set up a passkey on your computer with Windows 'Hello'
1. Check you have Windows Hello enabled on your computer - You may need a system administrator to help you!
- If you haven't setup a sign in method already, open 'Windows Hello' on your computer and set a PIN or other method.
2. At the sign-in page, enter your normal username and password - You'll need an active account to set a passkey!
3. Click the 'Create a Passkey' check box, then click the 'Sign in' button.
4. Confirm you want to create a passkey. Click the 'Create a passkey' button.
5. Next, choose where you want to save the passkey. Choose Windows 'Hello' or mobile phone or other device.
- Windows Hello will show one of the available methods: your PIN, fingerprint, face or other method.
6. Follow the instructions on your computer to finish setting up your passkey.


Set up a passkey on a mobile phone
This option requires Bluetooth to be enabled on both devices.
1. At the sign-in page, enter your normal username and password - You'll need an active account to set a passkey!
2. Click the 'Create a Passkey' check box, then click the 'Sign in' button.
3. Confirm you want to create a passkey. Click the 'Create a passkey' button.
4. Next, choose where you want to save the passkey. Choose mobile phone.
5. Your mobile phone will ask you to authenticate with your fingerprint, face, PIN, pattern or other method.
6. Scan the on-screen QR code and follow the instructions on your device to finish setting up your passkey.

Note: you only have a minute to complete the registration, if it times-out, you will need to start again.
If you're using an Apple device, you may have to turn on iCloud Keychain. Your passkey will be available across all your Apple devices.
